BEACHES
Kamaole I, II, III
The "Kams" are three long beaches along the south end of South Kihei Road. They have life guards, BBQ facilities, and are usually busy with locals on the weekends. 5-10 minute drive |
Ulua Beach (Wailea)
This is perfect for young kids and those who like to boogie board in smaller waves. There are showers, dressing rooms and an easy entry into normally calm, clear water. Also great for snorkeling. 12 minute drive |
Secret Cove (Makena)
One of the most beautiful beaches on this side of the island. This small cove is dreamy for watching sunsets. You'll most likely see a wedding or photo shoot, too! Head towards Makena and past Big Beach/Makena State Park. As the road narrows, there's a lava-stone wall on the right with an small "hole-in-the-wall" entrance on the south end. 25 minute drive |
Big Beach & Little Beach (Makena)
The big beach past the Makena cinder cone is one of the best beaches in Hawaii. The waves can be massive with a shore break. This can be very dangerous and is only recommended for those who are experienced ocean swimmers. If you hike over the rocks at the north end of Big Beach, you will find the clothing-optional Little Beach. This is often a good place for body surfing or boogie boarding. It's a good idea to go early or late in the day. 20 minute drive |
Polo Beach (Wailea)
A beautiful crescent-shaped beach in Wailea. The north side is in front of the Fairmont Kea Lani hotel and can sometimes be crowded. Check out the south side (shown) for more peace & quiet. A great spot to snorkel. 15 minute drive |
Ho'okipa (Paia)
This world-renowned windsurfing destination often has dramatic and impressive surf. It's great for experienced windsurfers and for sightseers. You might also see turtles sunbathing on the beach. 35 minute drive |
